What is Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol)?
Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol (C₂H₅OH, CAS 64-17-5), is a clear, colourless, volatile and flammable alcohol that mixes completely with water. It is one of the most widely used industrial solvents and is the active ingredient in most alcohol-based sanitisers and disinfectants.
Industrial ethanol is sold mainly in two strengths. Ethanol 96% (often supplied as Extra Neutral Alcohol, ENA) still contains about 4% water. Absolute ethanol 99.9% has been dehydrated to remove almost all water, for processes where water must be excluded.

How Extra Neutral Alcohol Is Produced
From sugar cane molasses to 96% ENA and 99.9% absolute ethanol.
- FermentationYeast converts the sugars in diluted sugar cane molasses into a low-strength alcohol "wash".
- DistillationThe wash is distilled to separate the alcohol from water and the spent solids.
- RectificationMulti-column rectification strips out methanol, aldehydes, esters and fusel oils to give a neutral-odour 96% spirit.
- Dehydration (99.9%)For absolute ethanol, the remaining water is removed, typically with molecular sieves.
- Quality testingEach batch is tested for strength, methanol, aldehydes, esters, higher alcohols and other parameters, recorded on the COA.
