Sodium bicarbonate is easy to handle, but humidity makes it cake and heat slowly breaks it down. Keep it cool and dry.

What Is Sodium Bicarbonate?
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃), also called sodium hydrogen carbonate, baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, is a white crystalline powder and a mild alkali. It is used as a leavening agent in food (E500ii), to raise alkalinity in swimming pools and water treatment, in fire extinguishers, in flue gas treatment and in many cleaning and industrial processes.

Sodium bicarbonate is made by passing carbon dioxide through a solution of soda ash (Na₂CO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O → 2 NaHCO₃), or as an intermediate in the Solvay process. Some is refined from natural minerals such as nahcolite.
What Is Sodium Bicarbonate Used For?
- Food and beverages: leavening in baked goods (it releases carbon dioxide with acids or heat), effervescent drinks and tablets, and pH control. Food grade only.
- Swimming pools: raises total alkalinity, which buffers pH and stops it swinging.
- Water treatment: adds alkalinity and buffering to soft or desalinated water.
- Flue gas treatment: dry sorbent injection to remove sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride from exhaust gases.
- Fire extinguishers: the base of some dry chemical (BC) extinguishing powders.
- Oil and gas: treating cement contamination in water-based drilling fluids.
- Cleaning and other industry: cleaning products, soda blasting media, leather tanning and textile processing.
How Much Sodium Bicarbonate to Raise Pool Alkalinity
To raise total alkalinity (TA, measured as CaCO₃) by a target amount:
kg of NaHCO₃ = pool volume (m³) × TA increase (mg/L) × 0.00168
Worked example: to raise a 500 m³ pool from 80 to 100 mg/L total alkalinity: 500 × 20 × 0.00168 = 16.8 kg. As a quick rule, about 1.7 kg per 100 m³ raises alkalinity by 10 mg/L.
Add it in portions, spread across the pool with the pump running, and retest after a few hours. Most pools aim for total alkalinity of about 80–120 mg/L; follow your local operator guidelines.
