What Is Ammonium Hydroxide?
Ammonium hydroxide is ammonia gas (NH₃) dissolved in water, written NH₄OH or NH₃(aq). Also called ammonia solution, aqua ammonia or ammonia water, it is a colourless, strongly alkaline liquid with a sharp ammonia smell. Industrial ammonium hydroxide is usually sold at 25% NH₃ and is used in water treatment, textiles, rubber latex, metal finishing, fertilisers and chemical manufacturing.

How Ammonium Hydroxide Is Made
Ammonia is produced from nitrogen in the air and hydrogen (usually from natural gas) in the Haber–Bosch process. Ammonium hydroxide is made by absorbing that ammonia gas into purified water until the solution reaches the required strength, typically 25%.
N₂ + 3 H₂ → 2 NH₃ · NH₃ + H₂O ⇌ NH₄⁺ + OH⁻
The second reaction is reversible, which is why ammonium hydroxide always smells of ammonia: some of the ammonia stays as a dissolved gas and escapes from the liquid, faster as it warms.
How to Dilute Ammonium Hydroxide 25%
Most processes use ammonia at a lower strength than 25%. To make a weaker solution by weight:
kg of 25% solution = kg of final solution × target % ÷ 25
Worked example: to make 100 kg of 5% ammonia solution, use 100 × 5 ÷ 25 = 20 kg of 25% ammonium hydroxide and 80 kg of water.
Add the ammonium hydroxide to the water, not the other way round, in a well-ventilated area, using cool water. Wear goggles, chemical gloves and respiratory protection rated for ammonia. Check the actual strength on your batch COA, since it can fall slightly once a drum has been opened.
Why Heat Matters for Ammonium Hydroxide in the UAE
- Drums build pressure: 25% ammonia solution starts to boil at about 38 °C, so a drum left in the sun releases ammonia gas inside and can bulge.
- Open drums cool: let drums cool in the shade before opening, open slowly, point the bung away from people, and wear eye and respiratory protection.
- Strength falls when open: ammonia escapes from open or poorly sealed containers, lowering the concentration and filling the area with vapour.
- Store shaded and ventilated: keep drums out of direct sun, in a cool, ventilated area, sealed between uses.
- Never mix with bleach: ammonia and sodium hypochlorite or chlorine form toxic chloramine gas.
